Horrified World of Monsters

One game series that has received very little attention in Germany is the Horrified series by the American game design studio Prospero Hall and Peter Lee. It is published in the USA by a German publisher. Ravensburger Postponed. After three games, the series launched directly in Germany with two new titles. One with a Dungeons & Dragons license and one with a collection of monsters from around the world. Find out how Horrified plays and whether it's worth it in our 5-minute preview.

This 5-minute insight is intended to deliver what the title suggests. A brief insight with our opinion in just under 5 minutes of reading..

Long ago, a lake was discovered that represents a mysterious intersection of arcane energies. Since its discovery many years ago, it has been studied by the brightest minds in the world. But suddenly, something is drawing monsters into the world. As guardians of the veiled void, it is our duty to confront them.

"Pick up and Fight"

Horrified: World of Monsters is a cooperative adventure where 1-5 people team up to defeat two to four monsters. Each monster is defeated in a different way and has a different difficulty level.

Play proceeds clockwise. Each turn consists of a hero phase and a monster phase. During the hero phase, we can perform as many actions with our hero as the hero has action points. We move across the map, rescue citizens, pick up and exchange items, and weaken or defeat monsters. The basic gameplay loop is a kind of pick-up and deliver mechanic. We collect the items lying around on the map and use them to weaken and defeat monsters. This usually involves solving a small puzzle or task, which varies depending on the monster.

During the Monster Phase, a card is drawn and resolved in the classic way. This card indicates where new items appear, which event occurs, and which monster attacks. If a monster attacks, a die roll determines how it attacks. It can inflict normal hits or unleash its so-called "power." These are particularly powerful effects that make our lives even more difficult.

A game is won once all monsters have been defeated. The game is lost when the terror marker reaches the end of its track or the monster card deck is depleted.

Conclusion

Horrified: World of Monsters is pleasantly easy to play. The rules are so simple that even casual gamers can easily get into it. The game becomes even easier when one person controls the monster phase. Defeating the monsters was quite easy compared to similar gamesโ€ฆ We haven't suffered a single defeat in our test games so far. Or perhaps we've just been lucky, as all the test games were always very, very close. However, we haven't yet tested a game with all four monsters at once. That could be a whole different level of difficulty.

As a cooperative family game, Horrified is definitely a lot of fun. It's quick to set up and has some really clever ideas for defeating the monsters. The collaborative strategizing and discussion are especially enjoyable. However, the number of monstersโ€”only fourโ€”feels a bit small. We quickly played through all the monsters once. But we had a lot of fun and were definitely looking forward to moreโ€ฆ which you could theoretically get with Dungeons & Dragonsโ€ฆ

Summary
Horrified has made it to the German market and it's really fun! More variety would be great, as you see everything in the game pretty quickly.
