The gates of hell will also open for board game fans next year: As the publisher Glass Cannon Unplugged reports, a board game based on Blizzard's Diablo franchise is expected to start as crowdfunding - and a pen-and-paper role-playing game is also planned.
Oops, that came as a surprise - and given Blizzcon 2023, somehow not. GLass Cannon Unplugged, the makers of board game adaptations of Frostpunk, Dying Light and Apex Legends, have announced a Diablo board game and a role-playing game. Both will probably be realized via crowdfunding next year, as you can already make a note of the “start of the campaign”.
Diablo isn't dead at all...
Admittedly, things were pretty quiet around Diablo 4 until the start of the new Season of Blood. With the announcement of a board game, at least a breath of fresh air is coming into the franchise. This makes the board game from GLass Cannon Unplugged the latest planned entry in the hack'n'slay series after Diablo 4. With the title, Blizzard gave the classic a modern coat of paint and implemented significantly more MMO elements. Diablo is one of the veterans of the genre: the first part of the series came onto the market in 1997. Fans love the releases to this day, sometimes more (Diablo 2!), sometimes less (Diablo 3!), sometimes not at all (Diablo Immortal!).
The fact that Blizzard's milestones also appear as board games is rare, but also a regular occurrence: there are several implementations of World of Warcraft, Warcraft and Starcraft. With Diablo, the dark role-playing game is now finding its way onto the home board game table for the first time.
The idea is likely to be closely based on the template, even if there are basically no details about the game. When it comes to adaptations, Blizzard usually ensures that the idea of the original is followed. Accordingly, it will be about adventures in Sanctuary, about heroes - and about the eternal conflict between demons and angels. The most important note from GLass Cannon Unplugged so far: Fight against several opponents at the same time. This means that the character as a hack'n'slay title could also be retained on the game board. However, how the makers want to achieve this is currently a secret.
It is uncertain whether the hallmark of the video game - procedurally generated dungeons - will also be implemented in the board game. However, given the many well-functioning modular game concepts among board games, the chances are pretty good. It can be assumed that Glass Cannon Unplugged will rely on randomization in some form.
The board game and the role-playing game are both being developed with the support of the creative team behind the video games, which should ensure accurate content in the adaptation. The tabletop role-playing game Diablo is set to debut at next year's BlizzCon, developer Blizzard's annual celebration of its games. The event usually takes place in early November or late October. Diablo: The Board Game will launch a crowdfunding campaign, with a launch and release date to be announced.
