According to a media report, Sony is working on a handheld to use the Nintendo Switch to compete. After the first step with the Playstation Portal, the company apparently wants to take the next step.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony is said to be working on a handheld that could compete directly with Nintendo and the Switch. However, the device should definitely be considered a powerful mobile device, as fans should be able to play Playstation 5 games natively on it.
Nobody wants to miss the train
Nintendo has The entire games market has been shaken up with the Nintendo Switch. Nowadays, hardly any major company in the video game industry wants to miss the boat. There is obviously a fear that they could be left behind if they do not focus on mobile or at least hybrid gaming devices. Sony has already got its foot in the door with the Playstation Portal, but it seems that it does not want to stop there.
Sources have reportedly told Bloomberg that Sony wants to expand its reach with the as yet unannounced handheld. Specifically, the company is said to want to compete with Nintendo in the mobile games market. The highlight: the device should be able to play or emulate PlayStation 5 games directly - the handheld should therefore become a standalone console. Valve could also become a direct competitor.
That sounds like a pretty big leap in performance, but it also says that the market launch of Sony's portable device is still years away. And nothing is certain anyway, Sony could still decide against the platform. The relevant information is thus partially relativized. All of the information must be treated as rumors anyway, because Sony has not wanted to make an official statement.
It is no surprise that Sony is also apparently thinking about handheld gaming. The successful devices from Nintendo, Valve and other providers such as Lenovo and MSI have changed the market for good. Xbox thinks about a handheld Sony's presumed plans are only logical. The company has already gained experience with the Portal - and the older PS handhelds. Sony is therefore not breaking new ground. The fact that the handheld is based on the Playstation Portal system - according to the report - is clever. However, everything is said to be in an early stage of development.
