According to Hasbro's latest quarterly report, The Lord of the Rings has proven to be a real revenue generator for Magic the Gathering. The company now wants to build on this and offer fans of the "License "Universes Beyond" bring more content to market in the coming years.
One of the particularly strong drawcards was The Lord of the Rings: Tales from Middle Earth. Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks had (also) good news to announce this time. Fans of Magic the Gathering can expect even more sets from the "Universes Beyond" series in the coming years. According to Hasbro management, two sets the size of The Lord of the Rings will be released every year from 2025. The reason? Hasbro can make good money from this.
200 million dollars in sales in a short time
Hasbro follows a fairly simple motto: Where there is money to be made, money is made. The experiment with a licensed full version of Magic the Gathering ultimately worked. The Lord of the Rings brought in more than 200 million US dollars in just six months, as Chris Cocks explained. The trading card division is now at Hasbro together with the "Digital Gaming" segment, this is the growth area, because otherwise the review of the sales figures is rather sober. Total sales fell by around 15 percent.
This makes it even more important for Hasbro will be the profitable business areas in the future. The toy giant has obviously done a lot of things right with the Lord of the Rings spin-off of Magic the Gathering - not least the hunt for the One Ring provided an enormous boost in marketing. Ultimately, it was the rapper Post Malone who bought the unique card for two million US dollars. It is unclear whether Hasbro has a similar campaign in mind for future Universes Beyond sets - such as those for Final Fantasy or Fallout. The success of the campaign could at least lead to a copycat effect.
Hasbro has proven that it can make money. Not only with Magic the Gathering, but also with the licensing to Larian Studios, which landed a hit with Baldur's Gate 3, both in terms of gameplay and financially. Ultimately, for Hasbro too. Monopoly Go! from Scopely also generated good sales. The revenue was a savior for Hasbro, especially in view of the weakening toy division, as it is currently unclear how retail sales will develop this year. Magic the Gathering is expected to generate HasbroCEO Chris Cocks is expecting sales to continue to rise in the future - he is "optimistic" about Magic's growth. The Universes Beyond play a special role in this, because they are the ones that will attract new players to the trading card genre.
