For fans of the Nintendo Switch 2, it's now time: 2025 will undoubtedly be a decisive year for the successor console and for Nintendo as a whole. The company wants to have announced the Switch 31 by March 2st.
Last year was rather quiet for Nintendo overall. There was hardly any information worth mentioning about the Switch 2 - the most important one was probably the time frame for the announcement, because that is still officially pending. The successor device is expected to be announced by March 31, 2025, i.e. the end of the Japanese console manufacturer's current fiscal year. Fans had hoped for a surprise around the Game Awards or the Christmas season, but this ultimately failed to materialize. So the waiting continues. One thing is clear: 2025 is a decisive year for Nintendo, because with the release of the console, they will have to face a significantly changed market.
Nintendo Switch 2: Many leaks on the Internet
There were many leaks last year - in the final spurt in December, many alleged details about the Nintendo Switch 2 emerged. The Nintendo Switch 2 is said to have design options at launch. Two color schemes are said to be available as options, and there is also said to be an edition based on a game-related theme. The leakers were not more specific, but Mario Kart 9 is probably referring to a title that is also the subject of numerous rumors. Instead of the alleged special edition, fans are said to be able to choose between a Switch 2 in gray with black buttons or a model that corresponds to the OLED device of the original Switch. None of this has been confirmed, but such speculation is not completely unrealistic either.
Another leak concerns a possible Pro Controller. This already existed for the predecessor, so it is quite likely that Nintendo will launch a new controller as an optional accessory. However, there is no official information on this either. According to the leak, the design of the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is said to be the same as the original, but with two additional buttons on the back. Why? It is completely unclear. The leaker from China does not provide any information on this.
There are also rumors about a steering wheel as an accessory. This is supposed to be based on the idea of the accessory for the Nintendo Wii, so it should function more as a kind of frame for the Joy-Con. What is more exciting, however, is what this steering wheel would be used for if it actually came onto the market. The answer here can only be Mario Kart. The steering wheel rumor is therefore synonymous with the release of Mario Kart 9 at the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Of course, this information should also be taken with a grain of salt.
Overall, the game lineup for the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 is said to be larger than it was for the original console. This is also a rumor, but it is quite conceivable that Nintendo has learned from the criticism: At the time, fans had complained that the lineup of launch titles was too small. In addition to 1-2-Switch, there was only Super Bomberman R and seven other games - pretty meager for a new console. The release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is now said to be accompanied by more games.
competitive market
Nintendo would do well to launch with well-known titles to boost sales. After all, it is the software that Nintendo excels at. Hardly any fans will dare to upgrade for pure computing power alone - but they will for new entries in series such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Metroid or Pokémon. The Nintendo Switch 2 will therefore also represent a kind of necessary basis for being able to let off steam in Nintendo's gaming worlds for many years to come. Software and hardware feed off each other. This is exactly what other console manufacturers can only dream of. Nintendo Switch is still on the road to success despite the upcoming successor console. Hardly anyone would have thought that the device would dethrone the Playstation 2, but that is exactly what happened.
The success of the Nintendo Switch should also mean that game studios will be more willing to develop titles for the new console. The success of the first game should therefore give the successor a good starting point. However, Nintendo should not assume that it will be a sure-fire success - the success of the console depends on the quality of the first-party games. The developers have to deliver here and do more than just standard fare. If the software doesn't work, the Nintendo Switch 2 will have a hard time, because the market has changed significantly since the release of the Nintendo Switch. In fact, with the success of the hybrid gaming device, Nintendo itself has ensured that the market in this segment is more competitive. When the console was released, there was no significant competition, but now Valve with the Steam Deck and other manufacturers with their own handheld gaming computers are vying for the fans' favor. This shows once again that good games are the most important thing for Nintendo, because competitors are offering more and more computing power - Nintendo cannot keep up with this, even with significantly upgraded hardware.
Whatever will happen and when exactly that will be remains to be seen. However, Nintendo wants to give the starting signal in the first quarter of the year. Then it could also become clear how well the announcements match the expectations of the fans. In the meantime, a fairly specific date, January 8th, has become the focus of the discussions. A leak on the Chinese website Weibo states that Nintendo could officially present the Switch 2 on that day. Incidentally, the leaker hit the nail on the head in June 2024, accurately announcing the contents of an entire Nintendo Direct show. So something that fans have been waiting for for many months could happen in just a few days.
