Starcraft is one of the most popular real-time strategy games of all time – even though the series only includes two main games. Fans are eagerly awaiting Blizzard's release of a new game. Now, that's happening in a different form: board game publisher Archon Games has taken on the brand.
Starcraft is a true classic: Blizzard Entertainment released the first installment in the series in 1998 and quickly followed it up with an expansion, Brood War. Almost ten million copies had been sold by the summer of 2007. Starcraft was and remains not only a great game, but also a financial success. In some parts of the world, an e-sports scene has developed around the real-time strategy game. Ten years later, an improved version of StarCraft and the expansion Brood War were released, with a higher screen resolution of 4K. The developers continued the success with Starcraft 2 and its three expansions: Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, and Legacy of the Void. Fans are still playing the game today, but the scene is still hoping for a sequel.
Starcraft as a board game
Apparently, publisher Archon Games (including Masters of the Universe: Fields of Eternia and Masters of the Universe: Fields of Eternia) has heard the fans' calls. As announced on March 26, a Starcraft miniatures game and board games based on the brand will be released. The tabletop game is scheduled for release in 2026. Board games (Archon Games uses the plural here!) are expected to be released in or after 2027.
It is “an honor” to bring the universe to the table as a miniatures game, says Jarek Ewertowski, CEO of Archon Studio.
Of course, the official license is used. Blizzard Entertainment uses it quite sparingly. While there has already been a Starcraft board game – much loved by fans – and several Warcraft titles have also been released, the overall number of adaptations of Blizzard games today is small. Recent spin-offs such as Small World of Warcraft or World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King were good, but appealed more to board gamers in the lower entry-level segment. The games published by Archon Games so far are aimed at at least connoisseurs or even experts. This can ultimately be assumed for the announced Starcraft board games as well. And the makers confirm this, at least for the debut title.
There's hardly any information worth mentioning. The publisher writes about the tabletop game: "The StarCraft Tabletop Miniatures Game allows players to command their favorite factions—Terran, Zerg, and Protoss—in dynamic, tactical battles, staying true to the fast-paced and strategic essence of the popular RTS game. The game features high-quality miniatures, rich gameplay mechanics, and deep faction customization options that will delight both StarCraft veterans and tabletop wargamers."
Further details will be released later this year, including a preview of the miniatures and gameplay. There will be an "Ask me anything" stream on April 3rd:
