Europa Universalis IV, Paradox Interactive's flagship historical strategy game, celebrates its tenth birthday this month. Since its release in August 2013, EU4 has become a favorite among desktop rulers and history lovers, offering a seemingly endless number of possible pasts.
Set in the four centuries between 1444 and 1821, Europa Universalis IV allows players to take on the role of any nation of the period as the world moves through the Renaissance and Reformation to the Enlightenment and the Age of Revolutions. They explore the globe to discover new lands, select national ideas that suit their ambitions, and challenge themselves to surpass the famous rulers and conquerors of the past.

Europa Universalis IV has been constantly developed and improved since its release ten years ago, making it one of the oldest strategy games still actively being worked on. Paradox Tinto released the Domination Expansion Pack in April 2023. It offers even more options and historical flavor for many of the game's most popular nations.
“Ten years is a long time to support a strategy game,” says game director Johan Andersson of Paradox Tinto. “Europa Universalis is our flagship and will therefore always remain a special case, but I am always impressed by the creativity and ambition of our development team. Europa Universalis IV has changed significantly from its original draft, but the core ideas have remained the same. Players should be able to create new stories in which their nation is at the center of world events. We've continued to add more variety, more strategy and more real historical flavor over the last decade, and EU4 has led directly to the establishment of our Tinto studio in Sitges, Spain. We owe a lot to the community that has developed and sustained this game over the last decade.”
To celebrate this anniversary, Paradox has dedicated the month of August to a series of new community events. This includes storytelling, artwork and special challenges for Europa Universalis IV players, as well as deep discounts on the game at participating online retailers.
