To everyone's surprise, THQ Nordic has announced an adaptation of the classic RPG video game Gothic. The project will be financed through a crowdfunding campaign. A big plus point for fans here: the title will be released in a German-language localized version. But big names alone do not bring success in crowdfunding - the creators have to be careful here.
Gothic is getting another spin-off, or something similar is the headline in some games magazines at the moment - and by that they don't mean another video game from the Gothic series, but a board game. This is quite surprising, because THQ Nordic is taking on the responsibility for the adaptation of the classic by Piranha Bytes, which was originally released in 2001 and is still one of the most well-known German games productions today.
But the big international breakthrough failed to materialize. A remake that is currently being developed by Alkimia Interactive and is due to be released this year for PC, Xbox Series and Playstation 5 could change that. The name Gothic stands for epic RPG adventures, a lot of story and a dark game world - perfect conditions to turn the original into a board game with noticeable role-playing elements.

According to the description, fans take on the role of a "shadow" in the board game. This member of the Old Camp wants to make a name for himself in the colony, so he completes tasks and takes part in battles in the Valley of Mines. The Gothic board game can be played alone or cooperatively with up to three other players. However, there are also references to a classic role-playing experience in an alternative mode: one player then takes over as a game master. In this way, the group can partly change their gaming experience themselves, which should ultimately benefit the long-term fun.
THQ Nordic has now confirmed a German version of the board game, which is hardly surprising given the roots of the classic. The game will also be released in English and Polish, and there may be other language versions.
The fans are very enthusiastic about the idea. However, the project is not without its risks, and followers of the Gamefound campaign were quick to point out one point of criticism in particular: the half-finished appearance of the board game and the poor presentation of the campaign that this resulted in. According to the makers, the board game for Gothic is in the late alpha phase. The basic principle is that internal play sessions are currently taking place to put the idea through its paces - and to improve the game even further.
THQ Nordic makes it clear: "We have built a playable prototype for the game sessions - but it is in no way visually representative of the final product." Nevertheless, this could be a problem for undecided supporters in a crowdfunding campaign, because expectations are often high, especially for games with well-known licenses. In addition, there is a strong focus on glossy campaigns: the eye also eats in crowdfunding. Because fans rarely get to play the titles for themselves - here and there there are playable demos online - the appearance is often the main argument for or against participation.
The creators say that the graphic designers are currently working on the game board, the card design and the miniatures. They also want to offer a game version via the Tabletop Simulator - then there will also be game reports and gameplay impressions. Until then, fans will have to make do with a little rendered material. This could ultimately mean a risk for the success of the campaign, after all, established publishers have already failed with far more impressive presentations.
