With Media Aetas, game author Marc André builds on his game Majesty: your crown - your kingdom from 2017. Instead of being published by Hans im Glück, his new game was published this year by the Swiss game publisher Board Game Box and immediately made it into various social media posts. Wherever you looked, the game shone with its presence on the gaming tables. You can find out how good Media Aetas really is in the following review.
As the lord of a fief, we decide its future. Do we build walls and protect our villages and their inhabitants? Do we strengthen our agriculture and plant fields? Do we build churches or hold celebrations in our palaces? Do we go to war and build barracks? All of this is in our hands. Only one can become the most influential fief in the kingdom.
Short Rules – Lots of Depth
Media Aetas is a tile-laying game for 2-5 people that lasts about 30-45 minutes. The aim is to have the most coins at the end of a game. A game lasts 16 rounds. In each round, the players take the tile or property from the current row on which their playing piece is standing in turn order (from left to right). The active person places the property in the appropriate place on their personal board on their turn. All effects associated with the type of property are then activated. Finally, the active person places their playing piece in the next row on a property that they want to use in the next round. Then it is the next person's turn.
The property tiles are arranged in 4 rows. While you start in the top row on your first turn, you place your playing piece on the next row down round after round after you have carried out the action of your piece. When the players have reached the fourth and therefore bottom row, they place their piece back in the top row. When everyone has placed their piece back in the top row, an event card comes into play and its effect is applied. This can either give more points or have other negative or positive effects.
The property decides on our action
Depending on which type of property you chose in the previous round, you use different actions in the current turn. The actions either earn you coins or protect your own tableau from enemy attacks. Other actions can reserve properties for later rounds or improve your personal tableau. This is also urgently needed, because the more your own tableau is improved, the more coins you can get if you play cleverly.
After carrying out the property action, the active person receives coins for the number of property types that are under the row of the property type placed. These can bring in more coins through improvements whenever a property is placed in this column. So round after round you try to set up your own tableau in such a way that you receive more and more coins and end up being the richest person in the game.

Conclusion
I'll be honest. I find it difficult to put the rules and conclusion of Media Aetas into words. The game shines with its simple game principle, but it really does thrive on learning by doing. The individual property tiles have a different action depending on their type, which has a completely different effect on the game. Explaining this can be a bit overwhelming, especially at the beginning. However, the symbolism of Media Aetas is perfectly tailored to be simple and understandable. Once you play a round, you usually understand the game very quickly and can bring more and more tactics into play. The basic principle of the game is also simple: take a tile, carry out the tile's action, collect the money, choose the next tile.
The whole thing is a little reminiscent of Kingdomino, but the different actions of the individual tile types make Middle Ages a little more complex. Nevertheless, Media Aetas always remains quite relaxed. Another nice thing is that it is played quickly. Our test games lasted about 30 - 45 minutes.
In summary, I would say that Media Aetas is a good game and I really enjoyed it. It looks a bit old-fashioned, but it has high-quality game material. People who are looking for a type of Kingdomino that has more tactical depth should definitely take a look at Media Aetas, because the individual actions make the game exciting and surprisingly tactical.
