Spieler bilden zunächst Festung und bauen eine Armee auf und vernichten im Idealfall all ihre angreifenden Opponenten, die Welle um Welle versuchen die Festungsmauern einzureißen. Wie aus anderen Conan-Spielen bekannt, nehmen gigantische Avatare eine große strategische Rolle ein. Das Beschwören der mächtigen Einheiten kann Spielern entscheidende Vorteile in einer Schlacht bringen. Funcom möchte das erste Echtzeitstrategie-Spiel im Conan-Universum nicht in den Sand setzen und hat sich daher von Beginn an professionelle Entwickler eingekauft: verantwortlich für die Umsetzung wird das erfahrene Studio Petroglyph sein, das bereits Titel wie Star Wars: Empire at War entwickelt hat.
