The release date remains unknown for Diablo Immortal, the mobile spin-off from Blizzard's popular "Hack 'n Slay" series. At the presentation of the business figures, Activision announced that the mobile game will go into alpha testing later this year. A playable version is approaching step by step as is the release of Diablo Immortal. However, the game does not go into the test phase worldwide.

Since the announcement of the game was not particularly well received by fans and it was comparatively quiet about Diablo Immortal in the months after BlizzCon 2019, it would hardly have been a surprise if Activision had announced the end of the project. It is now clear: the opposite is the case.

Diablo Immortal test starts this year

As part of the presentation of the business figures, Activision boss Bobby Kotick also discussed the mobile game Diablo Immortal – albeit only briefly. Accordingly, the first regional tests are already planned for "mid-2020". "Regional" probably does not include Germany: While Kotick did not specify the regions in which the Diablo Immortal alpha test will be available, it can be assumed that the test was carried out in an area close to developer NetEase will, presumably Asia. However, regions such as Australia or North America are also possible test markets.

There the first players will be able to download and play Diablo Immortal in order to give the developers feedback afterwards. Hopefully these will be more positive than those of the fans shortly after the game was announced.

At BlizzCon 2019, Blizzard showed a gameplay trailer for Diablo Immortal:

Players reacted reserved to negative to Blizzard's plans to decouple a mobile game from the Diablo series. At the time that was also due to the expectation Diablo 4 would be announced, overall, many fans consider Diablo Immortal to be a Diablo copy with the unpopular Free-2-Play model. Should the first playable version convince testers, things could smooth out. Blizzard should also hope for that and will continue to hold on to the game.

Diablo Immortal will be released for smartphones and tablets with iOS and Android. The mobile game relies on an independent story that is located between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3. Among other things, there will be new play areas in the World Sanctuary.

Initially, wizards, barbarians, monks, crusaders, demon hunters and necromancers will be playable. Because the mobile game closes a gap between two parts of the Diablo series, the title has at least a purely story-wise right to exist.

Whether Diablo Immortal can also convince playfully, there will be an initial answer this year. When exactly the game will be released has not yet been determined.
