Ravensburger shows for the first time how the new trading card game (TCG) “Disney Lorcan“ is played. The game publisher is also presenting initial plans for its Organized Play program, with which it supports specialized toy retailers with in-store events. The focus should be on fun and community for TCG enthusiasts and beginners alike.
The Trading Card Game will be available from August 18th in specialist toy stores, and from September 1st in other stores as well. Disney Lorcana is a fantastic collectible card game that introduces two or more players to the wonderful world of Lorcana. Players take on the role of powerful wizards known as Luminari, using magical ink to bring a team of Disney characters to life. These are called "mica" and appear both in a familiar form and in a completely new interpretation.
“We have developed easy-to-understand rules”
In Disney Lorcana, players and their teams of Glimmers explore the world of Lorcana to collect legends. You play characters, actions and objects from your hand and decide whether you want to challenge your fellow players with your "glimmers" or collect legends. Whoever collects 20 legends first wins.
"Four factors were essential for my co-designer Steve Warner and I when developing the game: accessibility, fun, strategy and excitement," said Ryan Miller, co-designer and brand manager of Disney Lorcana. "We've developed easy-to-understand rules that we believe will appeal to new players, while still adding enough strategic depth to the game to delight experienced players as well. We also wanted to make sure Lorcana felt like a Disney game, which is reflected in the artwork, card text, and game design.
For example, Disney Lorcana has song cards based on the songs from the associated Disney movies. You don't have to sing them while playing, but we'd like to encourage players to do so."
The rules of the game are basically based on a system of resource generation and card actions already known from the classic Magic the Gathering. The big difference: Instead of having to play special resource cards - in Magic these are lands - players can turn one of their hand cards into "ink", the resource in Disney Lorcana, once per turn. This makes it clear that decisions in favor of the resource pool and thus possibly against individual good cards in hand - or vice versa - have to be made again and again. The discarded cards stay there permanently.
Anyone who previously had doubts about whether Disney Lorcana could actually achieve the strategic approaches of trading card games like Magic the Gathering and Co can breathe a sigh of relief: Apparently the card game is aimed at ambitious TCG fans because of the rules. In any case, the chances increase that Disney Lorcan can establish itself on the market.
"Organized Play"
The Organized Play program supports on-site events such as game nights in local toy shops. Qualified toy retailers receive an Organized Play Kit with promo cards, pins and other prizes for players.
“Supporting local toy retailers is critical to building a community around a TCG,” said Miller. "Our goal is not only to support the longevity of our game, but also to create a home away from home where Disney Lorcana players and collectors can meet to play and trade."
Specialized toy retailers can use the Organized Play Kit to host tournaments or "Disney Lorcan“To support league games. Players earn points primarily by playing (win or lose), bringing a friend to play, or teaching someone the rules. They can then exchange these points for a prize. The Organized Play Kit contents support a 12-week league play program.
A list of participating local toy retailers will be available prior to launch disneylorcana.com be available.
