Trading card games have been winning the hearts of players of all ages around the world for many years. But the mix of collecting, trading, deck building and dueling can be tricky. Now Ravensburger is helping Disney fans get started in the TCG universe. The Lorcana board game "The Beginner" guides greenhorns through the basic rules and the specific intricacies of the card game involving Elsa, Mickey, Stitch and co - without any sense of rush and with a large portion of fun.

The first trading card game, "Magic: The Gathering," came onto the market in the early 1990s. The next titles followed shortly afterwards. Some TCGs have already celebrated their thirtieth birthday. A period of time in which it is hardly surprising that a new start is fraught with hurdles for beginners. But now, unlike the rule with well-known player magnets such as Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon, the board game from Ravensburger offers a guided introduction that - I dare say - makes the transition to all systems easier for beginners. Ultimately, it is a clever innovation that takes the elitism out of the trading card society.

Lorcana board game removes hurdles

Anyone who has been playing for a while will know that the basic rules of trading card games are usually similar. The lore, however, is the biggest difference. This is also the case with Disney Lorcana. The board game guides the Luminaris, as the players call themselves, step by step and in simple terms through the game mechanics. It feels a little like a patient old player offering his experienced hand. No important step is skipped. The Disneyesque subtleties are explained in individual mini-campaigns that must be completed:

What awaits players in the Disney Lorcana board game

1st issue: Learning the rules

  • Game preparation
  • Getting to know the cards
  • Gameplay (exhausting cards and ink supply, playing cards, exploring and collecting legends, using skills, challenging)
  • initiate the end of the game
  • Get to know the official rules

2st issue: More information about the deck/cards

  • special features of the starch
  • Additional legends
  • make full use of opportunities
  • Playing against the rules
  • avert damage
  • Influential combinations

3st issue: Guide in mini-campaigns to learn the Disney Lorcan specific subtleties.

Quests that involve playing and deploying…

  • of heroes and villains, of challenging and exploring,
  • of songs,
  • of objects and skills,
  • of flying forms and shape-shifting.

After each completed quest, there are rewards that deepen the understanding of the game in an appealing way. This way, players gradually learn what Disney Lorcan and how to play the trading card game. The idea is clever: With this title, Ravensburger initially addresses real newcomers, who are then taken by the hand to take their first steps in an unknown genre. "The introduction" is therefore a real introduction that feels different than starting the game with one of the starter decks. Even with these, it is perfectly possible for newcomers to enter the world of trading card games, the basic mechanisms are then learned little by little - in a playful way and not by simply memorizing the rules and trying things out.

Lorcana - The introduction is aimed at two opposing players aged eight and over, and thus corresponds to the familiar duel character of a trading card game. The learning quests, on the other hand, are completed cooperatively. This twist leads to increased interaction, which also clears up the last ambiguities about the Luminaris without causing shame due to ignorance. Completely at your own pace and with absolutely no pressure, the first introduction to the collecting, gaming and tournament world of Disney Lorcana can be achieved in about half an hour. An introduction to the world of trading cards that is well worth it.

With this intermediate step, Ravensburger has created a small innovation that is directly linked to the Disney Lorcana brand, but can also be played as a spin-off on its own. So you can get involved with trading card games later, but you don't have to. Even without the next step, Lorcana - Getting Started is an interesting pastime, especially for families.
