That GTA 6 won't appear until 2025? Gifted. It will probably accompany fans of the series and the genre for many years after its release. Currently much more interesting than the release date are the details about the protagonist couple of the gangster game. Rockstar Games mixes a touch of Bonnie and Clyde with a pinch of modern asshole behavior - the result is probably something pretty good.
The focus at Grand Theft Auto 5 has been on the online mode for a long time now: causing chaos, getting up to mischief, just having a good time. You can easily sink hundreds of hours into the mode and probably still not have had enough. What often goes under the radar in the GTA video game series are the many great stories that Rockstar Games knows how to tell. Admittedly, the presentation of characters, their views of the world and the glorification of crime seem out of date - and at the same time, in a strange way, more current than ever before. The characters in GTA are particularly responsible for this.
Lucia and Jason like Bonnie and Clyde
Not much is known about GTA 6. What is known, or at least assumed at the moment, are the names of the two main characters: Lucia and Jason. Even in the trailer shown, a noticeable dynamic develops between the two, a real connection. This is exactly what was sorely missed in parts of the predecessor. Michael, Trevor and Franklin from GTA 5 were strange and worked together, but the three were not a brotherly gangster trio. On the contrary: there was often trouble, which fit the story, but rarely really affected the player. That means: The character outline was there, but it was only really noticeable in rare moments.
And then the ending sequences… we don’t want to give any spoilers. Some people could actually still play GTA 5 because of the story as a bridge to the successor. In Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games confronts fans with a kind of crime love story - at least that's what the trailer suggests. What will happen during the game is unknown. In typical Rockstar style, it could develop in any direction: from a romantic gangster love story in the spirit of Bonnie and Clyde to a tour de force in the spirit of a natural born killer, everything is possible.
After all: the new duo provides a breath of fresh air. Lucia, as the first real female protagonist in the GTA series, provides even more breeze - apart from the playful possibilities in the Game Boy offshoots. If you look at the other original types of the main characters, this step was long overdue. However, that doesn't mean that you can't later criticize the design of the characters: at least you'll find plenty of stereotypes in GTA 6. The trailer already suggests it.
At Rockstar Games, in the end, it's not just the story on paper that is usually convincing, but rather its presentation. The style of storytelling will probably be one of the best features of GTA 6 - it would be a tradition in the gangster games series. Tommy Vercetti, CJ, Niko Bellic, the trio Michael, Trevor and Franklin: all of them and their dark secrets offered perfect starting points to tell exciting stories. Red Dead Redemption shows that the track record is not based on coincidences or is simply connected to the gangster setting that fans almost always like. In both games you can get lost in the story, get tons of cool characters and experience a video game that is more like a movie than some real Hollywood films.
You would like at least a little Arthur Morgan in GTA 6. It would make for outstanding moments. That Rockstar Games screwed up the story about Lucia and Jason? It's possible, but unlikely. The track record of developers who have a sense of the necessary details is too good.
However, the expectations of the fans are correspondingly high, as they expect nothing less than perfection after the sometimes pale but still legendary crime trio from GTA 5. The love story approach has the potential - in all directions - to significantly surpass its predecessor, because this emotional dimension was completely missing in Grand Theft Auto 5.
