2K and Gearbox Software have revealed the first look at the advanced gameplay of New Tales from the Borderlands, a standalone choice-based story adventure set in the Borderlands universe.
The reveal was accompanied by an exciting character trailer that introduces the three loveable losers whose destinies players choose.
Cinema quality adventure
New Tales from the Borderlands is being developed by Gearbox Software, who have partnered with alumni of Telltale Games' story team to create the story. The new, self-contained story full of heartwarming emotions also impresses with its daring sense of adventure and flair for storytelling with new protagonists and classic Borderlands humor.
In the newly revealed gameplay, fans will get their first taste of the deep and immersive cinematic adventure that brings together the ruthless corporations of the Borderlands, powerful chamber technology with the potential to change the universe, and three ordinary people.
The decisions of the players determine - often in surprising ways - the course of the story. And only by beating the game can you fully appreciate how drastically your choices can shape the Borderlands.
Success or failure in QTEs has a noticeable effect on the course of the adventure. Sometimes it even ends prematurely or the story takes an unexpected turn.
In addition to stunning environments, New Tales from the Borderlands boasts vastly improved motion and facial animation, utilizing performance capture and facial mapping technology for the first time in a Borderlands game.
Three lovely losers
Those interested in learning more about the protagonists of New Tales from the Borderlands will find what they are looking for in the new character trailer, which introduces the selfless scientist Anu, her ambitious and "refined" brother Octavio, and the boisterous, frogurt-throwing Fran.
- Anuradha Dahr: Even if Anuradha (Anu) still has to work on her social behavior in some situations, she has absolutely no problem solving problems! With her tech glasses, she can calculate complex processes and crack tricky puzzles. She is an incorrigible do-gooder who dreams that you don't have to walk over dead bodies to be successful.
- Octavio Wallace Dahr: Anu's adoptive brother Octavio often overdoes it a bit with self-confidence. If he has his way, he's a celebrity in Meridian City with plenty of connections. When it comes to gathering information, however, no one can fool him! Although Octavio's breakthrough is still a long way off, he wants nothing more than to become an entrepreneur and make a lot of money.
- Fran Miscowicz: Fran ensures lots of action with her wheelchair equipped with gadgets. Ever since her Frogurt shop was hit by a Maliwan laser, she's been on a quest for revenge against the people who vandalized her shop. To protect her friends, she won't let anything stop her. And hopefully the insurance will finally pay up soon – otherwise they will have to deal with Fran personally.
Every decision, big or small, can surprisingly alter the development of the story. Whether Anu's vision of a universe where money isn't just made with guns, Octavio's dream of fame and fortune, or Fran's frosty plans for revenge come true or fail depends on the decisions of the players.
New Tales from the Borderlands will be released worldwide on October 21, 2022 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Pre-order now to receive the Adventure Capital Pack, which includes cosmetics for Anu, Octavio, and Fran, 10.000 in-game currency, and an in-game FL4K Vaultlander collectible.
