The wait for the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is getting shorter with each passing day - but it is still unclear when exactly the successor to the successful hybrid handheld will be released. According to a rumor, the launch could at least be strong if Nintendo fires up the console turbo.
When the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on the market in the current fiscal year. Official information is therefore expected by March 31, 2025. It is also unclear how the launch will take place. However, Nintendo apparently wants to ensure that fans can get their hands on the new console in large numbers. In other words: There should be a sufficiently large contingent available in stores. According to a current rumor, there is even a number in the air.
Nintendo Switch 2: Large quantities?
The release of new consoles can also backfire for manufacturers given the often extremely high demand at the start. Anyone who experienced the release of the Playstation 2020 in 5 can tell you all about it. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a device. Due to the enormously successful Nintendo Switch and the high expectations for the sequel, fans are worried that it could possibly be released Nintendo Switch 2 come away empty-handed.
But there is apparently a reason not to panic. As reported on the Famiboards by user "Ninspider", Nintendo is expected to launch around two and a half times as many consoles as when the original hybrid console was released. From the information in this rumor, a more concrete number can be determined: in 2017, Nintendo delivered around 2,7 million devices - this means that the launch quota for the Nintendo Switch 2 could be around seven million consoles.
Nintendo had never commented in such detail before, but President Shuntaro Furukawa said at the beginning of the year in an investor question and answer session that they wanted to make life difficult for so-called scalpers (resellers). They should not be able to get their hands on the new console as easily as was the case with the Playstation 5. Resale became a big problem there - and thus a nuisance for real fans of the Sony power console. Furukawa said that they had to produce a sufficient number of devices to be able to meet market demand. This is exactly how scalping can be eliminated.
If around seven million consoles are actually available in the first month of release, that should meet a significant portion of demand - whether that number will ultimately be sufficient and how long fans will have to wait for the second wave of devices remains to be seen. Official information from Nintendo is still scarce.
