When SPIEL'6 takes place in Essen from October 9th to 22th, fans will be able to discover significantly more exhibition space there than they did during the Corona period. The organizing Friedhelm-Merz-Verlag registered a growth of 75 percent in the area booked by the exhibitors.
"The exhibition area of the world's largest trade fair for board and card games, SPIEL '22, is growing by an impressive 75 percent and is thus reaching the pre-Corona level faster than expected," says Friedhelm-Merz-Verlag. The signs of the world's largest trade fair for parlor games point to recovery.
SPIEL 2022 in Essen: Many bookings already in January
Last year, SPIEL already showed how important it is for suppliers of board and card games to present their products annually at the world's leading trade fair for parlor games. Because despite extensive travel restrictions and hygiene regulations, hundreds of game publishers from 2021 nations found their way to the Essen exhibition center in 41. Visitors and exhibitors reported a relaxed atmosphere and excellent buying and ordering business shortly before the Christmas season, which is so important for the industry.
“Last year's successful implementation ensured that there were already signs of a high number of bookings for SPIEL '22 in January of this year. Today, the trade fair can report growth of 75 percent in terms of its exhibition space and is thus picking up on the pre-Corona level of 2019 faster than expected. We were particularly positively surprised by the high level of commitment from exhibitors from third countries. We welcome a large number of game publishers from Asia, North and South America, Africa and Australia. Many exhibitors from countries such as Vietnam, Armenia, Kuwait and Qatar are on board for the first time,” reports Dominique Metzler, Managing Director of the organizing Friedhelm Merz Verlag, a subsidiary of Spielwarenmesse eG.
The abundance of new board, card and role-playing games that have already been reported promises game enthusiasts and retailers a diverse range of games that cater to every taste and every age. Thousands of tables will be available on site and invite visitors from all over the world to test and buy.
The supporting program at SPIEL will be consistently expanded. The EDUCATORS' DAY will take place again on Friday, October 7th. It is aimed at educators, teachers and other interested parties. Practical lectures and panel discussions show how board games can be used in the classroom and in community and senior citizen work. A panel hosted by Asmodee Research will showcase games designed for people with cognitive disabilities and present current research in the field. The Europa room is available to interested educators on Fridays. There, publishers present games that can be used well in the classroom at gaming tables specially provided. Last but not least, educators will have access to the new products show in Hall 1A on Friday, where they can get an overview of all current board game innovations.
Things get scientific on Saturday, October 8th. Under the title "More than just a pastime? Board game research in Germany” invites “Boardgame Historian” to the Research Day in the Panorama room during SPIEL '22. In four panel discussions, the topics "History in board games", "Board game collections", "Representation in board games" and "Potential of board game research for the industry and authors" will be discussed with experts from science and the scene. After the panels there will be time for questions and discussions.
After last year's break, families with small children can once again look forward to numerous animation areas in the "Galeria". An intergalactic play-along journey, a juggling studio, 20.000 wooden building blocks that invite visitors to build spectacular sculptures, bridges and buildings, a ball pool and much more ensure XXL fun.
So far it is unclear how the corona measures will turn out in autumn 2022. Against the background of the exponentially developing summer wave, the status now hardly seems to be the one that will apply in October. It's still just speculation, but the pandemic situation could lead to stricter hygiene and protective measures again in autumn. The main problem at the moment is the vaccination campaign, which has come to a standstill. The federal government has been recording very few vaccinations against the corona virus for weeks - moreover, the protective effect of previously vaccinated is gradually fading out. It therefore remains to be seen how the corona pandemic will change with a view to autumn - and with it the event landscape.
According to Messe Essen, the following currently applies: "The Corona Protection Ordinance of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, which will apply from May 5, 2022, allows trade fairs and congresses to be held." There is no obligation to wear a mask on the exhibition grounds, only a recommendation to wear mouth and nose protection. The trade fair also points out its ventilation systems and the "sufficient" space available in the entrance and exit areas. In addition, disinfectant dispensers are distributed throughout the site and contactless payment options are used.
